Outlook 2007 - Can't empty Deleted Items -Messaging Interface Unknown Error

K

Karl Laun

Outlook has been giving me fits lately. The most recent manifestation is the
message "The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the
problem persists, restart Outlook". when I try to empty the deleted items
folder. (Naturally, restarting Outlook has no effect, otherwise I wouldn't
be seeking help here.)

I was able to delete a few messages holding down the shift key, but the
majority of them refuse to go.

I also have difficulty sending e-mails to multiple recipients (messages hang
in the outbox and can't be deleted) I occasionaly get the "folder is full"
message. I am using the OL2007 format.

Where to start?

Size of pst-file?
What mail account type are you using?
Tried running scanpst.exe already to check your pst-file for errors?

Size of pst-file? 345mb

What mail account type are you using?
POP 3 mail account (3 of them from my local ISP)
Tried running scanpst.exe already to check your pst-file for errors?
scanpst fails just after completing phase 4 of 8 and reports:
"An unexpected error prevented access to this file. Use a disk error
checking program to check the disk, and then try using
Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 Inbox Repair Tool again."

I have run chkdisk several times, no errors found. Still can get the repair
utility to finish.

These problems just seemed to start recently (December), OL 2007 has been
relatively trouble-free for over a year.

Thanks for responding. :)

Can you successfully copy the pst-file to another location?
If so, connect to it via File-> Open-> Outlook Data File...
Then see if you can delete the items now.

Successfully copied Outlook.pst to a new folder. Opened it in Outlook
(producing a duplicate set of folders in the folder view)
I still can not delete anything from either file. Same message, (unknown
error)

Additional Info:

Ran Office Diagnostics from the Help menu. It reports all is well.
Ran "Repair" for Office 2007 from the Programs control panel. It announced
it had completed successfully
Disable all the COM Add-Ins via the Trust Center, no difference.
Disabled the Office support option in Kaspersky AV 7
Also tried totally suspending Kaspersky

Here's the log from the fail scanpst.

Is that report from scanpst.exe on the copied pst-file?
If you create a new pst-file via File-> New-> Outlook Data File... can you
then copy all your items to the new one?

K

Karl Laun

Yes, although if I run scanpst on the actual data file, I get the same
results. It never will complete.

I've been doing an interim workaround by moving the items from Deleted Items
into a newly-created folder, then deleting THAT folder. No problem with
that.
For a while I could delete 2 or 3 single items, then I got the error. Today,
it's all working like it's supposed to.
Case closed .....on that issue...for now.

I'm experiencing the exact same issue with Outlook 2007. Strangely, I was able to manually delete all files in the deleted items folder up to a specific date. At that point, I get the error "The messaging interface has returned an unknown error..." every time I try to delete a message

Did you find a solution to the problem. I've suddenly started having the same problem. Please let me know you if found a solution. Thanks

Did you find a solution to the problem.

What problem? You failed to quote the post you are replying to, and my news
client is warning me that no such article as identified in your References:

Ah. A visit to Google Groups, and a lookup of that article tells me...

It is ***NINE MONTHS OLD***!!!

For the sake of anybody who might be able to help you, what you failed to
include was this:

Now that people have an idea about what your problem is...

And count yourself lucky I didn't feel terribly lazy, tonight. I might just
have passed your problem over, for lack of a proper quote, or problem
statement. And don't whine about my not offering anything constructive. You
*should* take this as a constructive lesson in properly asking for
assistance.
