The messaging interface has returned an unknown error

"The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem
persists, restart Outlook." That's the error message I am getting when I
try to delete any message in the In Box.

Details:

Windows Me (4.90.3000)
Outlook 2000 SP-3 (9.0.0.6627)
Internet Mail Only - Security Update
PST size: 160 MB
Deleted items folder is empty

I ran scanpst.exe, no help. Researched the error message, and based on
what I found I installed SP-3 (no help). I ran detect and repair.

Nothing has helped. I'd appreciate any ideas. Thanks.

Follow up to my previous message:

I get "The messaging interface has returned an unknown error..." when
attempting to delete any message in the In Box.
Details:
Windows Me (4.90.3000)
Outlook 2000 SP-3 (9.0.0.6627)
Internet Mail Only - Security Update
PST size: 160 MB
Deleted items folder is empty

No help from scanpst or from detect and repair.

Checking the web and newsgroups, I only found one case that was (what I
would call) the same problem - Outlook 2000, and the "messaging
interface..." message appears when trying to delete an item. He was told
to clean out the deleted items folder and try again. That was the end of
the thread.

My deleted items folder is empty. In fact, the deleted items folder was
empty when the problem started.

Is it time for me to punt and create a new PST?
