I have a movie file I can't delete. It says it is being
used by another program but I can't find what it is. I
tried to delete it in safe mode and still didn't work. I
have win xp pro

Its some issue windows has with large files. change the
properties values and change the view in the folder..
example switch it to thumbnail view and try to delete. if
its alone in a folder.. delete the folder.

I havent been able to find a fix for this anywhere and
microsoft doesnt reply.

Explorer reads the whole file, for no good reason other than it doesn't expect gigantic video files.

You can wait. You can Ctrl + Alt + Delete and end all explorer proceses on the Process tab, then type cmd in File - Run and use a command line to delete. Type explorer in File - Run to restart it.

This can be a daunting and difficult task as it can be caused by many differnt things. It may be that you don't have permission to delete the file or that it is being accessed by a startup program in your msconfig\startup list or that a registry entry has this file flagged and active at all times. go>start\run and type in msconfig and then click the startup tab. Now look for any media player in the list and if it has a check mark beside it then uncheck it. This will stop the player from being loaded at startup and activating any associated files. This is a rather simplistic explanation of what is actually taking place but it leaves out the techie stuff that will only confuse you. If this doesn't work then we can go into the registry to delete the file but that is something that should only be done as a last resort and with very detailed instructions. Let us know. e:mail me if you need more help. Good luck.
