can't delete file on desktop

I downloaded a file on my desktop which didn't complete the first time.
I tried again later and it did complete alright.
Now I'm stuck with a 0 byte file on my desktop which I can't delete,
even in safe mode: "this file is being used by another person or program".

Any idea?
