Can't connect to the internet on WinXP using a wireless connection

I am having a problem connecting my laptop to the internet using a Dlink
router DI -524 and wireless adapter DWL-630. I have installed both several
times and each has its default settings. I am able to ping the router and
get its config menu, but I am not able to access the internet. In my network
connections I have listed an internet gateway connection, and maybe this is
the problem. I connect to the internet using the router and a cable modem.
I am not able to delete the internet gateway connection. If I connect my
laptop to the router using a wired connection it works fine. Any help would
be greatly appreciated, as I so far have about a week into this, and I am
getting nowhere.

Thanks,

Candie,

I'd be glad to help you solve your problem. My experience here has been that
every problem is unique - there's not a computer in the world 100% like any
other computer, and the symptoms and problems are unique too.
