Can't connect to server

In the last several days, my email account has stopped
allowing me to SEND email. [I can still RECEIVE
email]. I've made sure that my settings in Outlook 2003 [running Windows XP,
SP2] are correct.

When I try to send email, here's the message I get:

Task “mail.---.edu†– Sending reported error
(0x800CCC7D) : Your outgoing server does not support
SSL-secured connections. . .

I then tried to send test emails [under Tools / Email
Accounts / Change / Test Account Settings. Here are
the messages I received:

Send test e-mail message: The specified server was
found, but there was no response from the server.
Please verify that the port and SSL information is
correct. . .

Find Outgoing Mail server (smtp): Outlook could not
connect to the outgoing mail server (SMTP). The
problem could be the server name of the port, or your
server may not support SSL. Verify your port and SSL
settings. . .

This is a new problem. I don't think I changed
anything, but, I did allow XP to install the latest
group of "updates." Help.

Thanks

On your mail account properties, uncheck the option for SSL and try it
again. Not many servers use SSL, especially ISP servers.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After furious head scratching, Opus asked:

Thanks for the response.

I thought that might be the problem, but after the issue developed I was
careful to go back to the school's instructions to make sure that some switch
somewhere hadn't been changed. Here's the instruction:

"# Click on the Advanced tab in the Properties window. For both Outgoing
mail (SMTP) and Incoming mail (POP3), check the box that says This server
requires a secure connection (SSL). Click OK."

I tried unchecking it anyway; I just got a different error message.
