Can't close IE pop-up window

Just today, I have had a number of windows popup in IE
that I cannot close. In order to get rid of them, I
finally have to shut the computer down completely. The
most recent one is a banner ad from "Smart Protector".
When I try to close it in every way possible - I just get
a beep sound in return.

HELP
