Uncontrollable popups and can't close window

I'm running Windows ME and IE6.0 with SP1. Last week I
started to get an uncontrollable amount of advertising
popups as soon as I launched IE. They eventually grind my
system to a complete halt.

Moreover, I can't close any of my browser windows. I
click on the close box and only get a "ding" sound. Same
thing happens if I try to close from the menu bar. If I
want to close anything, I have to do so through Task
Manager, and that shuts IE completely.

Any advice would be appreciated.

First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
