Can't click on a link and have to right click and "Open"

Something odd has happened to my XP system. I'd say it happened after the
Desktop Search function appeared on my machine.

I can't click on a link in the browser. I can't click on a link on the Start
Bar. I can't click links from the Menu. And I can't shut the computer down
without using Ctrl Alt Del.

Also when in Word or any programme that uses Save As, I can't open the pull
down menu to choose a new destination. It pulls down but as soon as I move
the curse the menu closes.

I used the space bar to put a tick in the notify me of replies box as
clicking on it wouldn't work. And probably posting will require a right click
manouvre of some sort... assuming I can post at all! If you're reading
this... then I've succeeded but not by clicking on it.

I can open programmes from the Desktop

Also, I use this machine to edit video. When dealing DVD burning or
capturing, something happens to slow down the computer and corrupt the the
files bringing about errors.

Any idea how to fix any of this?

I'd say you are infected.

ActiveX Spyware & Adware Scanning
http://www.spywareinfo.com/xscan.php
This scanner is an ActiveX applet. After a short delay in which your
browser downloads the control file, you will receive a "Warning
Dialogue" requesting permission for the scanner to run. Click "Yes" and
the applet will pop up and scan. You will be alerted if any spyware is
found. When a spyware or malware is found, you will be alerted and
asked if you want to remove it. If no spyware is found, the scanner
will disappear on its own.
If nothing happens, or if you are using a browser other than Internet
Explorer, click here and choose either "Open" or "Run this program from
its current location". Do not choose "Download".

Not only will you find out if your PC is infected with spyware, but
you'll also see if other types malware are installed:

Hoaxes
This application is updated at least once a day, so it can always root
out even the very latest spyware.
And you don't even need to install any program, all you need is to be
connected to the Internet.

Since all your problems happened after installing the Desktop Search,
uninstall it. If uninstalling it doesn't put things back to the way
they were, do a System Restore to before you installed the Desktop
Search.

I used it and it didn't find anything. Afraid the machine is still in the
same state.

I'll try though I didn't actually install the desktop search. It appeared I
think after up-dating Windows Messenger.

But since I never noticed exactly when it appeared it seems a little
dangerous to try doing a systems Restore. Last one of those I did crashed my
computer and I never got working again.

Is there some sort of uninstall for it? I can't find any.

Uninstall for what? You need to determine what messenger program you're
running. Windows Messenger is different from MSN Messenger. If you have
MSN Messenger, there should be an entry for it in Add/Remove Programs.

System Restore is designed for problems like yours. If you had
difficulties using it before, your computer must have been troubled to
begin with. There's no way for me to know what was wrong and why you
had issues.
