Can't clean up unnecessary files...

When I go under "My Computer" I right click on the C drive. Then I
click on "Properties." From there, I click on "Disk cleanup" and it
goes to the little box that says it is calculating how much free space
can be freed up on the C drive and that it will take a few minutes to
complete.
It will not complete. It just stays on that screen until I finally
give up and hit cancel.
What can I do to fix this?
