Can't change TCP/IP settings

Last week my network adapters displayed in control panel/network
connections. A few
days ago I noticed that they are no longer there. I cannot changes TCP/IP
settings since
I no longer have access to my adapters.

I have tried removing the adapters from device manager in order to
reinstall but I get
an error stating they can't be removed. Also, I now have WAN miniport
adapters showing
under devices. I have no idea how they got there - also unremovable.

Has anyone has this problem before ?

Boot to Safe Mode and remove them.
Ignore any message that they can't be removed if presented.
Reboot and reinstall.
