Can't Boot to Windows, Can't boot to Safe mode

Something blew apart my xp2 today. The computer froze when my wife went to
open explorer 6. Task manager wouldn't work, so we shut down hard, rebooted,
and windows said "winlogin.exe-unable to locate component - this application
has failed to start because ole32.dll was not found". Services.exe, isass.exe
also had popups with the same ole32.dll warning. Windows then goes to a
blank desktop with no icons, no start button, no task manager. I tried to
boot in safe mode but received the same ole32.dll error. I tried to run the
Winxp2 install cd, but the cd-rom is not working. Nasty, it is. Any
suggestions in the group? Dell Indian techs keep telling me to do a clean
boot. i can't boot period right now.

Hi,

Winlogin.exe (as opposed to Winlogon.exe) is the Randex virus. If you have
bootable AV tools (the install disk or emergency disks), now would be the
time to use them. Personally, I would load the system with a BartPE disk
(http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder) containing stinger and scan the system with
it.

Well, I may have mis-written that Logon to Login. This Dell 4700c computer
is under warranty so I wrote the Dell techs and they believe it is a bad
motherboard (pure guess from India). I tried to boot this morning and now
chdsk says that the hard drive has unreadable sectors and chkdsk is currently
scanning as I write this on another computer. I have had an issue with the
op sys blowing up before, and on reboot, a chkdsk for integerity and repair
occured. Subsequent study for bad sectors on the hard drive showed no bad
sectors or any indication that the hard drive was failing. At that time, I
reloaded WinXp2 and it has been running fine for several months. I would be
suprised if this is a virus, but if is, I'm upset. My security is tighter
than a mosquito's ass stretched over a rain barrel. We run VirusScan
Enterprise, Full Version Sysweeper, AdAware. We also are firewalled with
Zone Alarm and router hardware. So if this slipped in, it was without any
indication whatsoever.

I appreciate your advice Rick, but I don't think I bootable tools would help
as the only thing I have is the cd-rom, no boots on usb rings, etc. I have
never seen a failure like this, so it will be interesting how it shakes out.

Hi Chris,

If you suspect a hardware failure - no reason this couldn't be the cause -
then you should also run the Dell Diagnostic tools if you want to T-shoot
it. Frankly, if it's under warranty you should just make Dell fix it and not
waste your own time on it. That is what the warranty is for.

Rick,
I am sure now it is not a virus. Dell is replacing the motherboard next
week. You're right. That's what warranties are for. I appreciate your
efforts and have a great week!

What's XP2? Is that a new OS? Is it written by Microsoft? Where can
I get it?
