Unable to start

gPlease can anyone help! When I try to boot winxp pro. It stops with an error
message saying 'winlogon.exe component missing' then says reinstalling could
solve the problem, but I am unable to boot, in any mode. It also sayd
'ole32.dll file missing'. I have tried safe mode. When I try and reboot with
the winxp CD in place, it will not start from CD. I have made sure that the
boot sequence has been changed, but still no luck. Please can anyone help!!

This KB article refers to a similar type error though a different file.
The resolution might be the same.

Error Message: Winlogon.Exe Could Not Locate Component. This Application
Has Failed To Start Because Comctl32.Dll Was Not Found.

Can the computer boot into safe mode in one of the modes such as safe
mode w/command prompt? If so do a system restore to before the problem
happened by running this from the command line:
%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe or
C:\Windows\System32\restore\rstrui.exe
then press Enter

If it won't boot into safe mode try creating the 6 six Windows XP setup
boot floppy disk set and use that to boot and enter the recovery console.

How to obtain Windows XP Setup boot disks

Once in recovery console follow the instructions of the first article
changing the file names appropriately.

If all of these seems a bit daunting you might consider taking it to a
competent computer repair person.

I may be wrong, but you appear to be posting the same question in two
different newsgroups at the same time, namely this one and also in "Windows
Basics".

People are trying to help you, but is is confusing and a watse of expert
assistance to have the same message in two different groups.

I am sorry! As you can see I am desperate, and need all the help I can get!!
This seems to be tricky problem. After trying all the obvious, I am now
crying out for any help that I can get>

HAve you tried to get in to the BIOS to see if you can get the CDROM as the
number 1 on the boot device? That might be why you can't boot to the cd...

Then continue with the rest of what I posted. Download the six setup
floppy disk set and go from there.

I have created a tool that will replace your missing or corrupted
winlogon.exe and ole32.dll files. You will need 1 blank floppy disk.
Download the tool from the link below. Run the file and it will copy the
necessary files to the floppy disk. Once created put that floppy in the
infected computer and reboot it (Note: the computer must be set to allow
booting from the floppy) Follow the prompts and agree to the license
agreement. At the A: prompt type "wnfix" without the quotes and press enter.
If successful it will tell you. Reboot. If not then let me know.

If your root drive is C:\windows then click here
http://216.122.228.48/downloads/wnlog.exe

If your root drive is C:\winnt then let me know and I will create a custom
disk for you.

If your root drive is anything other then C: then let me know and I will
create a custom disk for you.
