Can't Access Registry Key

Hello. I have one particular registry key that seems to be corrupt. It's
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/INTERNET EXPLORER/MAIN/FEATURECONTROL

I am an admin and have logged in as myself and as a local admin while off
the network. When I click on the featurecontrol key, I get the message:
Cannot open. Error while opening key.

It gives me the ability to set the permissions on it, but it can't save them
for the same reason as above.

I've tried to rename it, even tried to add a sub-key underneath it but
continually get the same error. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I am able to view/change/update/add to any other part of the registry.

Any help is appreciated!

See if first taking ownership of that branch helps you assign Permissions for that branch.

Thanks for your reply. I have tried to take ownership at all levels. The
difficulty is that when I try to save it, it won't allow it to. It appears
as if it just can't read it or access it at all.

Hi,

Have you tried logging on to the system locally, and assigning the permission for that branch?

Yup - i have signed in locally with the administrator username/password but
still have the same results. Even tried it in safe mode as well. It appears
that this is the only key that i have trouble with. I appreciate the quick
response.

Try running AccessEnum to see the Permissions for that branch. Check if there are any "Deny" entries.

AccessEnum v1.32:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Security/AccessEnum.mspx

If the Policies were applied centrally, check your settings at GPO.

Apply or modify permission entries for objects using Group Policy:

Interesting. I used accessenum and it lists the key in question twice. The
first instance has "???" under read/write/deny

The second instance has an * at the end and it says "The Handle Is Invalid".

Any more thoughts?

Thanks again!

I spoke too soon. I went back and re-read your post and reapplied the
permission set on the entire registry. It worked!! I truly appreciate your
rapid responses and ideas - Thank You!
