When I attempt to access "Outlook", I get a message saying
"Exchange server unavailable". I select "work offline"
and I get the message .."Programme: c:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\
OFFICE10\OUTLOOK.EXE. The operation has requested the
runtime to terminate it in an unusual way".

I am trying to back-up my e-mails from Outlook Express.
I have been told to export them to outlook, but I cannot
access my Outlook.

Is MS Outlook installed? Do you have an Exchange Server to which you may
connect?

Outlook Express (OE) File>Export can only be used to export messages to
Outlook or Exchange. To backup your OE data, see...
