can't access files on my desktop

Hi guys and gals.
I have a problem. I am running on XP on a standalone
laptop and when I create a file and save it my desktop it
is OK. I click on the file and drag it into another
folder on my desktop and when I go to open it again....I
get a message saying that i do not have permission to
open the file.

This is very annoying as I have files that I need to open
as well as delete and I cannot.......

HELP !!!!!!
