Can't access digital camera using Windows XP Pro

My digital camera (Vivitar) will not show up in the my
computer window. It showed up once, but now I can't get
it to show up again after I disconnected it from the
computer. The camera is connected to my USB port.
Here's what I tried:

1. I have tried turning my computer off and on
completely and I also tried just restarting it.
2. I have tried turning my camera off and on-- with the
computer on and with the computer off.
3. I have checked all connections--port and camera
functioning properly.
4. I have returned the camera, got a new camera but the
new camera showed up once and then did not show up in the
My Computers window again.
5. I have uninstalled and reinstalled USB devices, tried
to update my driver and scanned for hardware changes in
my Device Manager
6. I have tried to access the camera after disconnecting
my CD burner that is in my other USB port
7. I called the Vivitar support but they basically said
the camera might needed servicing. (I doubt that 2 new
cameras would have the same problem.)

Before I pack up my camera and send it back does anyone
have any ideas?

i had to use tweakui for windows xp to get my camera to
use the auto run feature. install tweak ui and open it
the click the+ next to my computer and the the + box next
to autoplay and check enable auto play for removable
devices. hope it works for you

Vivitar only provides a driver for Win 98. WIN XP is
supposed to automatically recognize the camera. It did...
but only once.

I tried this but unfortunately it didn't work. The
camera did not register in the individual drives list so
I selected to autoplay all of my removable drives. It
worked great for my Zip Drive--but not for my camera.
