stop you from refilling without Canon getting some indication from your
printer. Makes sense from their point of view as it allows them to stop
people lying somewhat about whether they've screwed up a printhead
themselves (using bleach or some poor ink) and getting warranty
replacements they don't deserve.

You forgot the ability to accept grey market cartridges. For example,
you can't buy cartridges for your north american printer from Japan and
use them, they are bci-7e and get rejected, well unless you set your
destination Japan. That would seem to be bigger than preventing
warranty claims as they issue printheads in advance, and at least in
the USA and according to the rep I spoke with, don't want the old ones
back.

The $29.99 you are quoting is probally the big black and the small
black together, which is the typical price.

Office depot it's $16 plus tax.

Weird. Amazon only seems to carry certain colors. Other colors, like
the yellow, are being sold by one of their outside sellers, and thus
you don't qualify for free shipping.
