Cann't to copy

I using WinXP with XP2, I have a problem now. That is I cann't Copy now, I
highlight whatever I want to copy and right click and choice "Copy" but when
paste is nothing to come out.
I try it in IE and Notepad are the same.
Cant anyone give a hand.

my daughter is having a similar problem but only with graphics. she can copy
them, but as soon as she moves her cursor into paint or psp the clipboard
goes grey. any ideas?
