Small business/Home peer-to-peer network. Cannot share files due to
permissions.

I have three computers – 2 desktops and one laptop. All connected through a
Lynksys WGC54C wireless router and a Lynksys Cable Modem. All three can see
the internet using the wireless infrastructure. All are part of a single
workgroup (mtbconst). The 2 desktops can share files with no apparent
issues. The Laptop can see the remaining computers but cannot share files.

After reviewing BROWSTAT status, I noted the browser on the laptop was
linked to TCP/IP where the other two were using NetBios. I checked the
TCP/IP WINS tab and noted the setting for NetBios over TCP/IP was set to
default. As these are connected through a router the IP’s are NATted and
therefore this should have been set to “Enable NetBios over TCP/IPâ€. This
was most likely why NWLink and IPX/SPX were installed. In addition it was
noted that Desktop #1 was running Qbooks which requires IPX/SPX to share
files. That said I did not remove NWLink and IPX protocols from the other
machines.

Therefore I attempted to get the laptop to bind to NetBios vrs TCP/IP, but I
did not find that configuration item (as in previous OS versions). My next
step was to remove TCP/IP (uninstall) and force the browser to bind to the
only protocol available – this did not occur. I noted I was unable to
“uninstall†TCP/IP, only to disable it. I attempted to stop the Computer
Browser service on the laptop, but this did not provide a solution.
I attempted to force Desktop #1 to bind to TCP/IP vrs NetBios, again to no
avail. I did remove Netbios and NWLINK protocols in attempt to accomplish a
bind to TCP/IP to no avail. By doing so the browser would not “bind†to any
protocol, howerever the laptop would see the desktop on the network
neighborhood. I re-installed NWLINK (and NetBios) to insure the other
machines would continue to communicate. I set up a pseudo domain
(mtbconst.com) under DNS in attempt to provide some results to no avail. I
placed the router gateway (192.168.1.1) into the DNS search to no avail. I
am sure I have missed a setting somewhere, but at the moment I am at a loss.

Check the following:

1) That printer and file sharing has been enabled on all computers

2) Check your firewall settings. If you have Norton installed you should
turn Windows firewall off so you only have ONE firewall. As far as I can
tell, most problems are down to the security that has been enabled. Tinker
around and see what happens.

If this is not the solution, good luck with other posts

Spud Mcfly;

Thanks for the suggestion. I disabled all firewalls both Norton and Windows
- howerever I will double check. Printer and File Sharing have been enabled
on all machines.

Thanks again

Please try again, remove IPX/SPX, and enable NBT. Having IPX/SPX will only
complicate things. Most Windows computers will run fine under NBT. Yours will
if you work at it a bit.
