cannot set custom security level with XPsp2

O

ornto

Hi, I just installed sp2 on a friend's pc. I set all of the security
levels in internet explorer to the default. But, since then my friend
cannot browse correctly anymore: he got lots of problem since that
security setting blocked javascript code in the browser. So, i pointed
him to the security tab in the "internet options" windows xp panel,
but strangely the button to customize the security level is disabled!
And, he can't set a security level lower than the default "medium",
since windows doesn't let him to do so (he can just set "medium" or
"high", but "medium" is not enough to have javascript work it seems).
How can I do? Is there a way to make that "customize security level"
button work again?

Thanks a lot
Marco

(sorry if in real life the buttons or tabs i mentioned have different
names, but I'm in italy and I can only try to guess how those are
called in the english version of xp)

Hi ornto :)

The installation of SP2 can detect some types of scumware that had been able
to stay undetected. It is possible that they have a spyware, malware or
other type of warez on their system causing the problem.

Have them check here:

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Also, I believe that SP2 will only allow you to set the security no lower
than Med. There have also been changes the security system so what worked
before may not work after installation:

You might try the following:

Allow active content to run in files on My Computer - Windows XP Service
Pack 2:
http://www.winxptutor.com/lmzunlock.htm

1. You might want to refresh your scripting engine:

Windows Script 5.6 for Windows 2000 and XP
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...43-7e4b-4622-86eb-95a22b832caa&DisplayLang=en

Sometimes there's a corrupt file in the cache and one must go to Tools |
Internet Options and click Delete Files.

2a. Start>Run>Regsvr32 vbscript.dll

2b. Start>Run>Regsvr32 jscript.dll

(WinXP users who have problems with 2a and 2b, see
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers_9.htm)

3. Re-register all DLLs listed in http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=281679

with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Can be caused by a trojan, often loading by unsavoury websites:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/js.fortnight.b.html

It may also be the Java.JJBlack Trojan.

There are several registry keys that could be causing a problem as listed
below - search for the following entries and disable or delete as
appropriate (making sure you make a backup of the keys beforehand). The
DWORDS may appear at :

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings] - or -

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control
Panel]

"Security_Zones_Map_Edit" or "Security_HKLM_only"

"Security_Options_Edit" which prevents users from changing security zone
settings and disables the Custom Level button and security-level slider.

"SecChangeSettings" or "SecAddSites"

"SecurityTab" (removes the Security tab completely)

Information about working in the registry is available here.
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers.htm#Registry

Also it may be a file called Inetcpl.cpl file is missing or damaged.
Depending on your operating system it is found in ...\Windows System or
%SystemRoot%\System32 folder. Replacing using MSCONFIG or System File
Checker (SFC.EXE) as appropriate for your operating system.

Jan Il;

Thanks a bunch!!! IE was closing everytime I tried to open the stocks quotes
in Yahoo. I was ready to rebuild everything, but thanks to you, I followed
your suggestions and I had one or more scumware. Thanks for your help.

Hi ornto :)
Tried everything listed with no success. But had error messages on 2a
and 2b, though there were no clues on the web page you mentioned...can
you be more specific?

Well...I think I will need a bit more details from you to be able to get too
specific. ;-)) What was the error messages that you got? The exact wording
if you can would really help. Also, did you find any types of scumware on
your system? If so, with which program, and did you post your HJT log for
evaluation as recommended? Was it clean or did you need to remove anything?

This information will help me make a clearer determination of what your
current situation is and what else may need to be applied. :)

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Before installing SP2, I cleaned the whole computer from verious
scumware with the aid of SpyBot S&D, AdAware and TDS-3 (for trojans).
I installed SP2 just when I was absolutely sure that the system was
really free (no match during scanning).

I've asked my friend to send me the right message he got from his
system, I'll post his reply as soon as he sends it to me (we don't
live very near you know).

By the way, about the custom security level button greyed out in
Internet Explorer options: we found out that by logging in as user
Administrator, the button is accessible. It's not when logging in as
the other user configured on the pc (yet, the outher user is still set
as a computer administrator!). We tried to find out special values
inside
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings] - or -
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Control
Panel]
like told in one of the previous posts in this same thread, but there
aren't!
And, logging into administrator account and trying to change script
setting from there, we noticed that in the default security level all
scripts are enabled :-(
This sounds like it's gonna be very complicated....
