Well, could be their SMTP server is down. I stopped using Gmail when I
found it was NOT an POP3-compliant service (although, at the time, I
didn't experience troubles using their SMTP server). Have you tried
deleting the e-mail account and recreating a new one? Can you
successfully use other POP3 and SMTP servers, like the ones provided by
your ISP? Could you post the *complete* error message here (you can
munge out any personal info, like a username)? Enable the
troubleshooting logging and then check if you are even establishing a
session with Gmail's SMTP mail server.
I doubt there is a huge community of Gmail users here. You might try
posting to the Gmail forums
(
http://groups-beta.google.com/group/Gmail-Help-Discussion and
http://www.gmailforums.com/). They're more focused on just Gmail. In
the meantime, you can always configure your e-mail account to yank from
their POP3 server and push using your ISP's own SMTP server.
