cannot send email

O

olintowery

when i try to send email, a quick flash appears on the screen (like the
action occurred successfully, very fast), but the message just goes to the
outbox and is never sent, even upon prompt at program termination. i have
checked all program and account settings, and everything is ok (especially
the send messages immediately checkbox). i entered a secondary unrelated
email address with different, known server addresses but the same thing
occurred. i downloaded mozilla thunderbird and entered the primary email
information and i could send messages with no problem. switching email
programs permanately really is not a viable option at this point. this is
not a server address problem, and the primary email does not require
authentication. just wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to fix this
issue.

Try to move all messages in the Outbox to the Drafts folder, or delete
them. If any refuse to do either, download and install this hotfix, with
Windows Mail not running:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Although it's labelled as for mail stuck in the Outbox, it also works in
other folders. If you don't know whether you have a 32-bit version
of Windows or a 64-bit version, try the hotfix for the 32-bit version
first. Many common antivirus programs, such as most of those from
Norton or McAfee, tend to cause stuck messages and other problems
in Windows Mail, although seldom immediately, so if you have such a
program, remember where to find the hotfix and hope it will install
again if you need it again. A recent version of the Trend antivirus
program also causes assorted problems in Windows Mail.

If this doesn't help, and you get error messages when you try to send
messages, click on those error messages and try to copy the whole
error messages into your next message. Also, tell us what if any
antivirus programs you have.

Which antivirus program is installed? Some of them are not
compatible with Windows Mail, and will need to be uninstalled.

Hi
I'm having a similar problem when I try to end emails, I get this message
The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'. Subject 'Fw: ?',
Account: 'pop.ntlworld.com', Server: 'smtp.tools.sky.com', Protocol: SMTP,
Server Response: '530 5.5.1 Authentication Required 40sm2471874uge.2', Port:
587, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 530, Error Number: 0x800CCC78

I've changed the outgoing SMTP port to a few different ones but it doesn't
seem to work.
My email address is "@ntlworld.com" and I'm on Sky broadband, but my Dad's
still got the NTL/Virgin account active at his house where I originally set
it up. I can receive email fine but not send it... any ideas guys?!

Thanks in advance!

See if this helps you find instructions for the ntlworld.com part of your
settings:

http://www.virginmedia.com/help/compatible/

It doesn't look like it near the top of the page, but go down further
until @ntlworld.com is mentioned.

I have also had this problem and use of the windows vista fix has been a
partial success. Now messages get sent whenever I start windows mail, but
otherwise sit in the outbox. I have to close the program and restart to send
messages - what next?

Click on Tools, then Options, then Send. Click on the box before Send
messages immediately, then Apply. If this does not leave a check mark
in the box, do it again. Click on OK. This should make it try to send
sooner.

If you used the standard install for AVG Free, it sometimes helps to
uninstall it, then do a custom install where you tell it to leave out the
part that scans email.

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff

You may not be able to reinstall a paid version of AVG this way
so if it runs under Vista, check if you can find a way to turn off
email scanning and leave it turned off.

Norton security products often cause problems with Windows Mail.
It is a crap shoot as to when and where the problem will start
happening. The only way to find out for sure whether Norton is
causing this problem is to uninstall it completely. If there is no
improvement you can always reinstall it.

If you've uninstalled Norton, and that cured the problem, then
download and install a more compatible antivirus like:
AVG free edition:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff
or
Avast free edition:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

With either of those, during the install phase you must select custom
install, and then deselect the email scanning option.

This problem can be caused by running a non-compatible antivirus.
Which one are you using?
