Cannot see "Server" on network

This is maddening... as I have done it numerous times before...

I am trying to share files across my home network. The "Server" is a
XP Pro SP2 box wired to the router. I am trying to browse shared
drives on the server with my laptop, which is wireless.

Both systems have a static IP on the network. (Server is 192.168.1.201
and laptop is 192.168.1.250) I can ping the server from the laptop.
Both systems have Internet access. The server has a fresh install of
XP Pro SP2. The Laptop's install is about 6 months old.

Both systems are on the "WORKGROUP" workgroup. Simple file sharing has
been disabled through Tools > Folder Options.

Through "My Network Places" on the Server, I can see "SERVER" and
"ZX5190US" (which is the laptop). When I go to browse the Laptop from
the server, I get the I dont have permission to access message (I can
provide the exact error if needed..)

Through "My Network Places" on the Laptop, I see nothing. I dont even
see the Laptop....

Going to Start > Run and typing in \\SERVER yeilds "\\SERVER is not
accessable. You might not have permission to access this network
resource..... The Network is not present or not started"

I was able to see shared folders on my other server before I took it
down. (It was running W2K3 SBS. I had to make it a Domain Controller,
and then all this crap started..)

Help please.....

Hi Home-boy,

Re: I can't see my own computer in the network
In the Entire Network, right-click on the Workgroup and click on
Explore.

In XP, check that the Workstation and Computer Browser services are set
to Automatic and Started (Start -> Run -> services.msc).

Check your own firewall settings.

Re: You can't access the share on another computer and get an error
saying you don't have permission.

In XP go to the computer you're trying to access, right-click on the
shared folder(s) and under the Security tab, check the Permissions.

In Windows XP make sure that the Workstation and Computer Browser
services are set at Automatic and Started (Start -> Run ->
services.msc).

That did it.... Workstation was set for automatic, but it was not
started.... I started it and everything seems to work .

Thank you...... now to fix other problems.....
