Cannot Restart

I installed IE7 on my laptop as recommended. Then, I attempted to start
Word. The system hung. Now, when I select start, I cannot restart, or
turnoff. I have to close my laptop to turn it off. Now I wish I had never
tried IE7. How do I recover from this?

One other symptom is there is a box in the middle of my screen when I am
looking at the desktop. It seems to display a portion the last page I
accessed.

Uninstall IE7 from the Control Panel and Click on Add/Remove Programs and
locate the IE7 and click Remove, Reboot and you will get IE6 back.
Then scan for malwares and Viruses on your computer.
HTH.
Please report back.

HI;
Your problem could be related to the incompatible toolbars or software
installed. Try checking your PC in Safe mode with network. If that
works fine, it is an issue with some other software on your PC. Email
me details of what happens or post here and you will get help.

I tried that, but it didn't work. The good news is, today when I booted up,
it downloaded security updates (for Windows, as I recall), and the problem
seems to have gone away. Thanks for your suggestions.

Thanks for the suggestions. See my reply today to "nass". The automatic
updates seem to have fixed the problem, thank goodness.
