Cannot Resize Internet Windows

Somewhere in all of these updates I can no longer position
my cursor over the edges in IE6 to resize the window. Got
a no help response from my computer manufacturer, Dell.
Any ideas?

If you right click the icon on the Taskbar, is Restore available or is it
grayed out?
If it's available, you may be looking at an off-position Maximized window.
Remove any 'Auto-hide' option for the Windows taskbar and while the window
is maximized, resize the taskbar then return it to the desired size. This is
to try to make Windows re-calculate the window size and boundaries.

If no joy, run regedit and remove these registry key values:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\window_placement

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Desktop\OldWorkAreas\OldWorkAreaRects

Then reboot.

This problem started on my XP Professional two weeks ago. Only happens with IE. As you move the mouse pointer to the edges of the Window, the arrow/pointer does not change to your selected resize pointer. However it works on any other application. I even downloaded Netscape (yuk) and it works fine there

I'm still able to resize the window by moving the pointer to the edge and dragging it, but the pointer is still an arrow. So the feature is active and works except for the arrow changing to split arrow or resize pointer

I tried different mouse schemes, mouse pointers, mouse drivers, mouses or mice (different brands - Logitech, Microsoft, etc) and still have same problem. And like I explained above it's only happening in IE 6

There are other postings explaining the same problem with no resolution (search for "resize arrow").

If any of you finds the solution can you PLEASE PLEASE post it here

Because of my slow connection to the internet (no DSL or cable available where I live) I have ordered the IE6w/SP1 CD from Microsoft. As soon as I receive it I'll try reinstalling it per your recommendation and instructions

I will let you know and keep you posted.

Thank you and PLEASE keep checking in here for updates. The CD may take a while to arrive. Microsoft usually tells you about 2 to 3 weeks. When I've order from Microsoft before I've received my CD's within the first 10 days. But you never know

In the mean time, if you come across other options while I wait for the CD please let me know here. I usually check in here once or twice a week

Alex – Here’s the latest…

I received the CD. Installed (or reinstalled) IE and received the “Newer Version Installed†message. I said, OK, let’s force a reinstall. Went into the registry, changed the “IsInstalled†subkey from 1 to 0 for the IE component.

Ran the reinstall and it completed successfully. After rebooting, open my browser BUT STILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM.

I then decided to also remove all the 3rd party plug-ins. Did that. Changed again the IsInstalled subkey to 0.

Deja-vu… Ran the reinstall and it completed successfully. After rebooting, open my browser BUT STILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM.

So – at this point I’m at a lost.

Like I explained before, I can still resize the browser window, except that the mouse pointer does not change to the appropriate resize pointer (double arrow). But the resize pointer works on every other application including Netscape.
I also explained that I tried removing mouse drivers, installing different ones including Microsoft’s and logitech’s (mouse drivers and mouse itself). All with no success.

I know that I’m not the only one having this problem. Here the these discussion groups are many people asking for help with the same exact issue.

In my mind, there’s got to be somewhere a switch that can be turn on and off to enable/disable this feature in IE since it only happens with IE. I just don’t know where else to look.

You have been really helpful and I appreciate if you can continue to search for a solution to this problem. PLEASE keep looking and let me know what else you find or any other suggestions you may have.

To troubleshoot this issue, could you please provide me with more
information?

1. Which version of the Windows operating system are you using?
2. I want to know if all the IE windows have the same issue? Or only pop-up
windows?
3. Is there any other issues except this one with IE?
4. When you open IE and then click "F11", could IE go to full screen mode?

I received the CD. Installed (or reinstalled) IE and received the “Newer
Version Installed†message. I said, OK, let’s force a reinstall. Went
into the registry, changed the “IsInstalled†subkey from 1 to 0 for the
IE component.

Ran the reinstall and it completed successfully. After rebooting, open my
browser BUT STILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM.

I then decided to also remove all the 3rd party plug-ins. Did that.
Changed again the IsInstalled subkey to 0.

Deja-vu… Ran the reinstall and it completed successfully. After
rebooting, open my browser BUT STILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM.

So – at this point I’m at a lost.

Like I explained before, I can still resize the browser window, except that
the mouse pointer does not change to the appropriate resize pointer (double
arrow). But the resize pointer works on every other application including
Netscape.
I also explained that I tried removing mouse drivers, installing different
ones including Microsoft’s and logitech’s (mouse drivers and mouse
itself). All with no success.

I know that I’m not the only one having this problem. Here the these
discussion groups are many people asking for help with the same exact issue.

In my mind, there’s got to be somewhere a switch that can be turn on and
off to enable/disable this feature in IE since it only happens with IE. I
just don’t know where else to look.

You have been really helpful and I appreciate if you can continue to search
for a solution to this problem. PLEASE keep looking and let me know what
else you find or any other suggestions you may have.

Let me answer your questions first

1. Which version of the Windows operating system are you using
I'm running Windows XP Professional Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack

2. I want to know if all the IE windows have the same issue? Or only pop-up
windows
All IE Windows- every time I open a browser window or that it pops up. Keep in mind, I'm still able to resize, minimize, maximize and restore. The only function not working is the arrow chaging to a double pointed arrow as it does in all other windows, including netscape

Also, keep in mind that this started happening around the beginning of March. And I am certain that I have not installed any new application since about February

3. Is there any other issues except this one with IE
Only IE. If I open word, excel, power point, netscape, quickbooks, nero, windows explorer, no matter what other window I open, the double sided arrow works fine - it shows when I move the mouse pointer over the edge of the windows

4. When you open IE and then click "F11", could IE go to full screen mode?
Yes, It can go full screen, minimized, restored, and the same with the help window, I can minimize it, restore it, etc BUT additionally, when I move the mouse pointer over the edges of the help window it switches to the double sided window. But not over the opened IE window

I will be happy to send you some screenshots if you want me to. I can even probably record a 30 to 90 secs video clip so you can see it happening. I would have to email it directly to you though. Just let me know how can I help you see what I see

I suggest you download Ad-aware 6.0 to scan and remove
spyware/adware/malware. Ad-aware is a powerful utility that will detect and

I have ad-aware installed on my PC already. I have not run it in about a month. I will do so tonight. I usually run adaware about once a month, and yes I always check for updates first

Now the the question is what are you suspecting? Are you thinking it has to do with some spyware running? why only with IE and no other apps

Rebooted my PC still with same problem

Thank you for your reply.

In my original post, I suggest you to run safe mode to see if the same
issue occur. You know this result is important to us to troubleshoot
further. Does the same issue occur in the safe mode?

In addition, I have two suggestions for you:

Suggestion One:

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Click Tools -> Internet Options... -> Advanced tab
3. Disable the "Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart)"
4. Ok.
5. Close all the Internet Explorer windows.
6. Open a new Internet Explorer windows to check...

Suggestion Two:

Try to create a new user and then you will get a new user profile. Logon
computer using the new user account to check¡­

In addition, please run the MPSReport utility and send the output CAB file
to me. The MPSReport utility is available at:

OK - I (We) have narrowed it down. In safe mode the problem does not occur. The double-pointed arrow shows up as it should

So then I tried your second suggestion - Disable third-party browser extensions.
Rebooted, and GUESS WHAT? - THAT WORKED. Now my double-pointed arrow shows up again

So we know that it's a THIRD PARTY EXTENSION, the question is which one
Probably in the registry there's an entry for each third party extension. I will have to - probably - disable each one at the time to figure it out

Alex - What's the best way to do this
