cannot remove a DC with DCPROMO

Enrique Garcia

When I run DCPROMO, to demote a DC, I get:

The operation failed because:
The directory service failed to replicate off changes made locally.
The DSA operation is unable to proceed because of a DNS lookup failure.

The Microsoft Article at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;263624

Does not give me any specifics, on what I need to add to the DNS.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
thanks in advance,
enrique

Hi Enrique,

Can you tell us how your DNS is configured? Is this the last DC in the
domain? What DNS server is it pointing to? Is that server accessible etc?

Cheers,
Katherine

This is in a classroom environment. The first installed DC, instructor's,
has DNS and is configured with the defaults, nothing else. The other DCs,
student's, are pointing to the first installed DC for DNS. The ones we want
to remove are all the DCs except the first one installed. All DCs can see
each other, and access each other.
I have also created an A record, and corresponding pointer. And it still
will not work.
If Auto Updates on the DNS, a necesity? I would imagine not, if I insert the
records myself.
???
hope this helps,
enrique
