Cannot receive email with Windows Mail

Ken & Pat

Just got Windows VISTA, set up my email using Windows Mail. I can send
message with no problem but when I try and download my email off of Comcast,
the program indicates it is receiving a list of messages but does not
download anything. I have checked all my settings against my old computer
running XP and everything is the same. Any advise? Thanks, Ken

Have you checked all the folders including Junk E-mail and
Deleted Items?

What happens when you send an email to yourself?

I am having the same problem, I have sent an email to myself and that doesn't
come thru either. It has worked fine for the last year and suddenly it
stopped. Mail will go out but not in????Help????

Do you get an error message when you try to receive? If so, right-click
on the error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without that complete error message.

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop-server.nc.rr.com',
Server: 'pop-server.nc.rr.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

I get this code above when trying to receive mail. Sending mail is fine.
Thanks,
Evans

That type of problem can be caused by interference from a non-
compatible antivirus program. Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.

If turning off your antivirus email scanning function does not resolve
your problem, consider upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it
is less prone to suffering bad effects from overly intrusive antivirus
programs: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:

I am running Norton 360. I tried turning off email scanning and that didn't
work. I had to uninstall it to get email to work. Now no problem with email.
Should I reinstall Norton 360 or am I OK without it?

Reinstalling Norton would (sooner or later) cause Windows Mail
problems again. But, do not operate without an antivirus, except for
brief test periods. So, you have two options:

1. Install a more compatible antivirus program. Of the free ones, the
following two are good choices:

AVG free edition:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff
or
Avast free edition:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

However, with either of those, during the install phase you must select
'custom' install, and then deselect the email scanning module so it won't install.

2. Instead of switching to a different antivirus, another option is to upgrade
to Windows Live Mail (WLM), which is more resistant to the adverse effects
of aggressive antivirus products: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

Even with WLM, you must disable email scanning in Norton antivirus.

Thank you Gary. I have installed AVG without the email scanning. i appreciate
your help. All is well now.
