Some years ago when I bought a new computer I stored word documents from my
old PC also XP on a floppy disk. Now when I open the disk the documents
appear as word pads, when I open a document it is a blank blue screen and
when I choose a programto open it, notepad etc. it is all garbled. What do
I do?
Many thanks

Using Word to write directly to, or read directly from, a floppy leads
directly and inexorably to file corruption. If you used to Word to save to
the floppy, they were probably corrupt to start with; if not, the act of
opening them from Word will likely have wrecked them unless the floppy was
write-protected.

Your best bet is to try copying the files from the floppy to your hard disk,
then try opening them from there. But don't waste time on it: chances are,
your files are lost.

There is more than one issue involved. Opening or saving documents directly
from/to floppy disc will cause corruption. Copy the files to/from your hard
drive before letting Word near them.

*Windows* reports the file type (WordPad or Word) based solely on the
relevant registry entry associated with the DOC extension. It doesn't matter
a jot what the file really contains. Re-registering Word should fix that. If
it doesn't you will have to change the registry entry by more forceful
means.

Word doesn't use this method to identify its files.

If you can recover the files by opening in Notepad and deleting the dross,
you should be able to do that in Word by using the recover any text from
file option in the file open dialog.
