I have searched and found this is a common problem.
I have two optical drives that have functioned well for at least a year, a
Plextor PX-320A DVD drive and a Plextor Premium CD. Last week both drives
stopped reading discs most of the time. If I put a disc in, the disc spins
up but explorer either gives a blank panel (no indication of a cd present)
or gives an incorrect function error.
Both drives are masters on separate channels with no other IDE devices and
both act the same.
I found that most of the time if I eject the disc with explorer, it will
recognize the disc when I re-insert it. If I eject using the players eject
button it almost never reads an inserted disc. I also found that once I get
explorer to read a disc, it will re-read the same disc properly if I use the
players eject button. But, if I put in a different disc using the player's
eject button it will not read it.
It is possible that the disc is eventually read. I tried to install a 5 disc
game but ran out of time part way through. When I came back, an unrecognized
disc had been installed and the installer was asking for the next disc. I
might have gotten that disc recognized before I left, but I don't think so.
I have the most recent firmware for both drives. I tried deleting the
drives in device manager and redetecting. I also moved to Windows SP2 and
all updates, but I have the same problem. I tried Microsoft's autoplay
Autofix program and got this result (look at the last paragraph):

The only events I can think of around the time this problem started were a
new installation of ExactAudioCopy and iTunes. Also, I accidently let EAC
try to eject a disc with my case's front door closed. However, both drives
have the same problem and I don't use the E: drive for those programs.
Ideas please?
