Cannot re-format HD with XP running

I need to reformat the HD and re-install XP. Windows will
not let me do this without re-installing Win95 then re-
installing XP. Surely there must be a way round this?
 
Do you have an OEM version or Retail version of WindowsXP?
Did you try setting your BIOS to boot from the CD and then doing it? It
asks for a previous version...just swap the CDs...when it verifies the old
CD, swap the CDs again and format and installation will proceed. The older
version must be a retail Windows CD and not a manufacturers reinstall disk.
