"cannot quit microsoft excel" 2002

Jim

Symptom: I left-click on a cell within a sheet, and from
that moment on Excel thinks I am trying to select a range
of cells. No other Excel function works, and the only
way to quit Excel is Ctrl-Alt-Del, which results
in "cannot quit microsoft excel", and an error report
being sent to microsoft. I reopen Excel with a blank
sheet, and the same thing happens. Other open apps
(Word, Outlook) work normally. I am using Office XP,
running under Windows XP Pro, on a Dell Latitude D600.

Any ideas as to root cause and the fix are appreciated.

This looks like the same problem reported by
PerplexedXLusr on Feb. 2 -- no fix has been cited yet.

You get this error when Excel is in 'Edit' Mode. (Try pressing F2 and exit).

It is most probably a problem with the mouse drivers. The user should try
updating or re-applying these and see if it fixes the issue
