Cannot prevent Control Panel explorer bar

Been using XP Home for two years and suddenly the Control Panel has the
explorer column on the left side which was never there before and is not
wanted. This necessitates clicking on "folders" for it to disappear.

Using classic folders and folders is unchecked under view. Read several
pages in two Windows books, read Help, and find nothing relate to this.
Under View, "Remember each folder's view settings" is unchecked which is
contrary to my thoughts, but that setting is what worked in the past.

What did I do to deserve this?

Try this and see if this helps you.

1. Open My Computer.
2. Click Tools - Folder Options
3. Click File Types tab.
4. Here select "{None} Folder" entry.
5. In the Actions window see which action is bold. Is it explorer. If yes,
then click in down under the "open" action and then click "Set Default".
6. None of both entry should be default.

Apply the changes and see if this helps you.

Thank you! It's back in working order as it should be. And now I do
recall opening the file type "folders" for some reason awhile back and
guess I somehow managed to select explorer as the default.

Won't do that again!

Just went back to a prior image from June 3rd and this has again reared
its ugly head. And this time, RajKohli's instructions do not clean it
up. Perhaps there is something else causing it?

False alarm. Discovered that all that was needed was to right click on
the tool bar at the top of explorer column and choose to close it. And
it hasn't returned.

Which raises the question: If the explorer column was wanted, how does
one go about turning it on? I'm sure there is a more direct method than
reversing the method described by RajKohli! Of course, I would never
want it there, but just out of curiousity ---
