Cannot ping gateway

System: Windows XP SP2, all current security patches, Sygate personal
firewall, Norton AV, Microsoft anti-spyware beta.

I was using "ContentProtect" (CP) software to shield my son from the
evils of the net. Turns out this program is not compatible with Sygate
firewall. Things started getting flakey, then the Internet connection
broke completely.

With the help of CP tech support, I uninstalled their software
thoroughly. They had me run LSPFix.exe to remove the hook. I manually
removed the registry entries and deleted all files. I then uninstalled
Sygate. I expected my connection to work at this point but it does
not.

Trying to fix, I ran:
netsh winsock reset
which didn't help, so tried:
netsh int ip reset logfile.txt
to rebuild TCP/IP.

I reentered the TCP/IP properties and everything looks fine. But I
still cannot connect. My wireless signal is strong and says I'm
connected to the gateway. ipconfig shows the correct info. I can ping
local host successfully. But every ping to my gateway (192.168.1.1)
fails and I can't get on the Internet.

(I still have Norton AV installed -- could that be causing this
issue?)

At this point I've tried everything I can think of short of
reinstalling Windows. An help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Gary

Problems from Content filters can be a real headache to troubleshoot. You
might try WinSock XP Fix http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
which I have found to occasionally work when LSP fix fails. I would also
check that the hosts file has no relevant entries and make sure there is no
proxy shown in IE LAN settings. I doubt NAV alone (assuming it's not he
Symantec security package with firewall etc.) is the problem. Also, have
you uninstalled Sygate? Sygate's an excellent firewall, but if damaged,
could be causing a problem. Uninstalling and reinstalling might be
worthwhile.

Thank you for your suggestion. I downloaded and ran the software you
suggested but unfortunately it did not fix the issue.

Do you or anyone else have any other suggestions? Do you think a
"repair" installation of WindowsXP is my best bet at this point?

You're welcome. A repair installation might well be the best solution at
this point.
