No network connectivity, ping fails

Problem: No network connectivity from a clean,
new, initial installation with no other software installed.

(This is an x64 bit installation on brand new hardware.)

Basic symptom: ping 192.168.1.1 fails

ipconfig /all returns:
"Windows IP Configuration"

and nothing else.

"Route print" returns only the loopback interface route.

"Repair" of connection returns window with an error:

"Windows could not finish repairing the problem because
the following action cannot be completed:
Failed to query TCP/IP settings of the connection. Cannot proceed.
For assistance, contact the person who manages your network."

Windows XP Professional x64
Ver 5.2 (Build 3790.srv03_sp1_rtm.050324-1447: Service Pack 1)
PC with AMD Opteron 152 chip
2 Gb memory
200GB partition created for windows

DVD based install.

Out of the box - Used network connections to create a connection.

Network Connection shows an enabled connection
that is "Connected" on "1394 Net Adapter".
These are installed:
- Client for MS networks
- File and Print Sharing for MS networks
- Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
-- this is set to obtain IP address & DNS automatically
(I've also tried entering in the IP address, subnet mask, default
gateway, and dns server manually.)

Home network with linksys router
Ethernet Cable is connected with green light.
Same cable tested on other computer in the office works fine.
Other computers in our home ping router 192.168.1.1 successfully.

Firewall is off. Virus Protection not yet installed.

Event Viewer shows nothing unusual.

Tried this:
netsh winsock reset catalog and reboot >> failed.

Russ,

Network connection should be local area connection (ethernet) because a 1394
uses firewire (ieee1394) cable.

Try to check if your network card is detected.

Thanks Rafael. In network diagnostics it shows a number of entries:
1394 Net Adapter, RAS Async Adapter, WAN Miniport (L2TP), WAN Miniport
(PPTP), WAN Miniport (PPOE), Direct Parallel, WAN Miniport (IP), and Packet
Scheduler Miniport.

I can't tell at this point wheter the OS has misidentified the NIC as this
"1394 Net Adapter" or if it doesn't see the NIC.

The CATV cable connector is direct on the motherboard. (motherboard == Tyan
Tomcat K8E S2865)

Not sure how to proceed. Help is appreciated.

I have fixed the problem. Rafael's earlier post led me in the right
direction....

I needed to download the drivers for my motherboard chipset.
In my case, at: www.tyan.com. I just let the installer do its thing and
WinXP almost immediately 'found new hardware'.

Thanks Rafael!
