cannot permanently delete mail

i have 1399 messages in deleted items that I cannot permanently delete since
windows mail gives this message for each

Message could not be displayed
Windows Mail encountered an unexpected problem while displaying this
message. Check your computer for low memory or low disk space and try again.

so how do I get rid of these items. If this is not resolved I will probably
stop using windows mail as I want these emails gone forever not sitting in my
deleted email folder

it works for all folders.
