My boyfriend bought me a Dell with XP Professional. I
cannot open and edit an xls file? (spreadsheet) Word
tries to open it, it doesn't look right, and I cannot
edit the information. What can I do, and which program
should I use? I would think that XP Professional would
come with a program that would allow me to open and edit
spreadsheets?
Thanks,
Becky

No, it doesn't. You have to buy Microsoft Excel separately or as a part of
the Microsoft Office suite.

Becky, you need to install EXCEL to open xls file....and
this is on an Microsoft office disk which has to be
bought.

BeckyLousiana,
Amazingly enough, Win XP Home or Pro do not come with 'Word or Excel'. You
need to install from one of your old Office CD's or buy Office XP.

Hi Becky,

An xls file is from MS Excel (spreadsheets). If you do not have that
program, you can download a free viewer here:

Close, but not exactly; Sun sells a very good version with
support. 60$ (i recall) for an amazing large suite of
software including a document editor (with the ability
to write PDFs, spread sheet, power point-ish tool, a draw tool,
and more!!!!.

There is a free version, 99% identical at www.openoffice.org,
downloadable. It's DIY support; buy a book and post questions on the
OO forum.

OO reads and writes all the MS formats, but not as default.

The MS viewers are very good, but of course they can't edit.

Well, do you have Excel installed?
