I was able to open .msg attachments in Outlook with MS Office 2000 but since
downloading to Office XP Standard for Students and Teachers Version 2002, I
have not been able to open .msg attachments.

What happens when you try?
If these are msg-files generated by Outlook 2003 or 2007 you won't be able
to open them in Outlook 2002/XP or lower.

It appears that this problem is caused by the latest version of Google
Desktop Search. It is not an Outlook bug. See the following Google
Groups link to fix this problem.

I have a similar problem and cannot open Outlook 2002 msg files in Outlook
2003. Any solutions?

Disabling the indexing of Google Desktop solved the issue for my user - and
they could open msg files in Outlook 2002 that were created in Outlook 2003.
(Outlook icon just flashed on the Task Bar when trying to open msg files.)

If Google Desktop is installed:

"In the meantime, I suggest going to Outlook Tools Options Other
Advanced Addin Mgr and unchecking GDS Outlook Addin. That allows you
to open .msg attachments - at least in OL 2002"

Thanks worked for me as well. Something seems to be seriously wrong
with Google Desktop. I remember about a couple of months ago as well,
I had some big issue in IE which was again traced to some Google
toolbar feature.
