Martin L.

Hi,

Here is my problem.

I have a file .msg on my desktop which I save from Outlook 2000.

When I open that .msg file, its opening a new email with the .msg that I was
trying to open in attachment.

How can I fix that?

Thank you very much.

Describe exactly how you saved it and how you're opening it.

I do File > Save As > and the file type is MSG.

But I also tried it by drag and drop.

Those files are save on under My Documents.

I go under My Documents and I double click on the email (name.msg).

If you drag it back into Outlook, does it look correct?

Yes its correct. But I need to open without having to drag it to my
Outlook.

Only Outlook can open a msg file AFAIK......if you want to open it outside
of Outlook then you need to convert it to a different format...

On My personnal PC, if a save an email by doing File > Save As and then I
save it a Message Format .MSG on my desktop for exemple.

Then, I double click on the email on my desktop(that I just save as an .msg
file) and its open correctly.

But, on the PC where I'm having the problem, if I do the same process its
not working. If a double-click on the email (that I just save as .msg file)
its opening a new email with the email that I just save as an attachment.

A bit of lateral thinking here - as a msg file can ONLY be opened in
Outlook, what purpose have you got in mind by storing them outside of
Outlook in the first place?

The MSG is opening with Outlook, which is OK I'm not trying to open it
another software.

We need to store them outside of Outlook, because we have limited space and
need to save it somewhere, because some of them are old or too big.

But it should work, because its working with all the PC that I test.

Only on one. When I doublec-lick on the MSG, its should open as an
email(with all the Outlook option), but for the PC only, its opening as a NEW
email with my msg as an attachment. Its maybe an option somewhere, but I
cannot find it.

R-click on the file, select Open With, Choose Program, tick the box by
"Always use the selected program..........", then select Outlook as the
Program, and click OK.

So you are using Exchange and have limited mailbox space? Just move the
message to a folder in a local pst file...

I tried it and its not working.

Thanks :)

Then I think you should be starting to talk to your IT dept about mail
storage.....

I'm in IT. I didn't set those rules by the way ...

But that didn't help me. I should be able to open the MSG correctly(outlook
format) and not as a new empty email with the original email(that I was
trying to open) in attachment.

It should work, becasue its working on every computer, except this one.

Yes I know. I think you have two separate issues here - the minor one, as to
why the msg file doesn't open correctly, and the major one as to how you
store your emails in the first place. Having to store them as msg files on
(presumably) a local HDD is NOT the best way of doing it, and it throws up
the fact that the organisation needs to revisit why that should be
necessary.

Does Outlook 2000 have Help, Detect and Repair?

Verify that the file type association on the PC having trouble matches the
file type association on the PC that works. In Control Panel, open the Folder
Options applet, select the File Types tab, find the .msg file type, click
Advanced, and look at the settings associated with the "open" action.

We need to store them outside of Outlook, because we have limited space and

You'd be better off, in my opinion, storing them in a PST, not as individual
msg files.

Already done that and everything.
