cannot open live web site on server

R

Ray Dar

I manage some dozen or so webs, created and maintained on my
frontpage 2002 client application. I've never experienced an issue
as I have now.

Suddenly, one specific web residing alone on a dedicated web server
will not allow me to connect. All of the other webs I manage do
work and are accessable as that was the first thing I confirmed.

The user-pw window does not appear at all when the error occurs and
that is the first symptom. Typing or click the address, go to, import, edit
from IE, all of these go arounds have been tried with no success. I've even
tried deleting the web inside the web folders group, and now can't access
the site to open the web up. The application does not reflect "not
responding"
in task manager either. There are noerror messages associated with this
situation at all. A network consultant I occassionaly turn to is able to
open
the site in his copy of FP2002 from his home using different username/pw.

Here are some additional symptoms:

PC: Windows 98se

* The web site is publicly reachable via IExplorer on this same machine.
Browse performance is normal and successful on the site using IE
* The web site is running W2000 server IIS 5.0 with server ext installed
and apparently delivering naviagation and java components to IE just
fine.
* A close acquaintance can access the live html web site using his own
copy of FP2002 without problem or any hint thereof. He has, as a favor
to me entered the site and recalculated the web.
* Attempting to reach the server through the following URL via IE results in
a DNS standard error page.

http://www.MYSITENAME.com/_vti_bin/_vti_adm/fpadmdll.dll?page=webadmin.htm
* Service Pack 1 and 2 have been installed for Office XP
* username/pw has been reset on the server via the above network
acquaintance
* FrontPage 2002 has been "reinstalled" from CD on my desktop

Nothing works to open this web site via FP2002 while all of the other webs
using
this same application open up and edit "live" just fine... no problem.

Can someone please help?

Thanks

Ric

Could be a corrupt web folder
See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=287402
Also find and delete all *.web (web cache) files associated w/ the site, and delete the network place (in network places) for the
site

Thanks for your response and reply. I was very excited in receiving the
information below. I performed all as suggested below. Delete the network
neighborhood listing had already been done.

Same Problem. Nothing changed. Reboot. Nothing changed. Same problem.

The symptom below began on Dec 23. I have only this last log file found:

wecerr.txt : 12/24/2003 13:40:05
Could not find a web server at 'www.bahiamar.com' on port 80. Please check
to make sure that the web server name is valid and your proxy settings are
set correctly. If you are sure that everything is correct, the web server
may be temporarily out of service.

########

the site is http://www.bahiamar.com is on line and functioning. As of
today there are two close work acquaintances
that are able to access the site using FP2002 and FP2003 using my user/pw.
This is really weird.

thanks for any help or suggestions.

Not running any firewall on problematic desktop editing station running
FP 2002. Here's what we know so far:

-anyone with copy of FP2002 that I ask to access the live web site via
FP2002 using my own username/password can do it. I can do it on
another PC in my home. Unfortunately the PC that has all graphics files
and other web sites I maintain is the one I'm now unable to access the
particular web site. The other webs (on different servers) are completely
accessible and workable in normal manner.

The web site is live on the web and reachable public access.
My FP2002 will not access this specific site any longer, after 3 years
of working with it and two software upgrades over the period of time.
I've completely ripped out FP2002 and reinstalled it twice.
I've deleted (wish I had not) the web folder for this specific site.
I have the disk based web folder intact, but using it as a "archive" of
sorts, it's not up to date and reflects the web site as of two months ago.

Any possible solution is welcomed.

thanks

Can you open the site in IE, then File Menu | Edit with FP?

If it is on a Windows 2000 or XP machine
Shut down IE and FrontPage.
Open a CMD window.
At the prompt type: ipconfig /flushdns and press enter.
When it says it has cleared the dns cache reopen FrontPage
and try again.
