Cannot open attachements in Windows Live Mail

G

Guest

I run Windows Vista Premium, my AV is Avast Free and I have two e-mail boxes
adresses. In one mail box I can open messages and the attachements and in the
other one I can open messages but not the attachements. Had the same problems
with Windows Mail. I've been reading and trying with no results. Thanks for
helping me.

I have the same problem I run AVG 7.5 as anti-virus. I've also tried
restarting in diagnostic mode (which I think stops all non-Microsoft
software from starting) but still I cannot open or save attachments. I also
cannot open the attachments if I use web-mail using internet explorer on
this computer.

By default Windows Mail deposits all incoming mail into one Inbox,
so your reference to two separate mail boxes is a bit mystifying.
Can you clarify this? Windows Mail does not treat different
accounts differently as far as general security settings.

In order for AVG to be compatible with Windows Mail it should
have been installed with the custom install option where one can
deselect the mail scanning module.

Is there an error message when you try to open or save attachments?
Make sure you have enabled attachments: Tools, Options, Security,
uncheck "Do not allow attachments..."

My wife has her e-mail adress where she receives her messages and I've got
mine. She can't open attachements in hers but when she transfers them in mine
I can. And vice-versa, attachements I can open in mine, when I transfer them
in hers, she can't.

So I take it that you and your wife have separate Windows user
accounts on the same computer? It helps to get these details
disclosed.

While signed into her Windows user profile, make sure her
Windows Mail has attachments enabled: Tools, Accounts, Security,
uncheck "Do not allow attachments..."

If that is not the issue, then it is likely that the antivirus program
is interfering. Do you have either McAfee or Norton antivirus installed?

I understand you can deselect mail scanning in AVG *after* it is installed,
but we've seen some reports here that unless it is done *during* the
custom install, disabling afterwards is not effective.

As a test, uninstall AVG, reboot, then see if attachments work.

I've uninstalled AVG but the hasn't solved the problem. Presumably I should
reinstall else I'm vulnerable to viruses?

I get nothing when I try to open a Mail attachment but "the command failed
to execute" when I try to save the attachment.

Attachments are enabled under Tools , options, security.

For some months, attachments worked normally. They stopped working a month
or so ago.

Any further ideas?

Go ahead and reinstall AVG with the custom install option where
you can deselect the mail scanning module.

I don't have any other fixes for you to try with Windows Mail, but
you might consider upgrading to Windows Live Mail:

Do you have attachments enabled? In WLM, go to Tools,
E-mail Safety Options, Security, uncheck "Do not allow attachments..."

Can you save the attachment, then can you open the saved file outside
of your email program? Does it affect all types of attachments, or just
certain types like .DOC, .PPS, etc.

I've updated to Windows Live Mail but still can't open attachments. I've
reinstalled AVG as you suggested ...but isn't it insecure without mail
scanning on?

Any other ideas...should I reinstall Windows Vista...it did work with
attachments for a while?

Mail scanning is redundant and unnecessary. For more on this
topic see http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

It wouldn't hurt to do a repair-install of Vista, see

I'ved enabled attachements and still does'nt work.

Also, I can't save the attachements. When I try by using the File I get a
message saying *There was an error saving one or more of the attachements.
Please check your disk space and try again.* Well that can't be, because I
have 165 GB free of 222 GB on my disk. And when I try saving by pointing the
attachement and right clicking the mouse to *Save as...* that procedure goes
to the end, but when I go check the attachement in the file that I'ved saved
it, there is nothing.

I don't know why your WLM won't save or open attachments.
Does it work in Windows Mail? If yes, then WLM may need to be
uninstalled and reinstalled.

Sounds like the problem is more serious than just one email program.
You may need to do a repair-reinstall of Vista, see

I had a client today that had the same problem. I read all the post, tried
all the suggestions, i.e., dump antivirus, clear temp files, finally I ran a
free program called CCleaner (www.ccleaner.com)- whamo! it was fixed. Hope
this helps others.
