Most often than not I cannot open such a mail message . It starts
downloading attachment and hangs at some %. I have to then go to read google
mail on the Web. OE on laptop seems to cope OK, but not Windows Mail on
Vista desktop PC

Does the message with attachment download to your Inbox, but the
attachment won't open? Any error message? How large is the attachment and
what is the file extension?

No, only a header is visible and when I click on it to retrieve the message
it starts downloading and may get to over 60, 80 or even 98% and then stops.
I use IMAP rather than POP with gmail. Sizes of attachments vary, could be
photos or some other files. Last one had 5 photos, each less than 2MB.
In Outlook Express it went all the way and opened it.

See Steve's reply. Either of his suggestions could very well be the fix.

It could be an IMAP issue. I'm not at all familiar with IMAP. It may also
be due to antivirus blocking the download, but its hard to tell.
