Cannot open attachements in Windows Live Mail

Nigel Burton

Have reloaded Vista which hasn't helped either opening attachments and has
disabled the sound.

The little loudspeaker at the bottom right of the screen has an X in it and
the message says "no audio devices installed". Does this mean the sound
card?...which looks fine on device manager.

The virus checker did show a couple of registry entries changed but this was
done at roughly the same time as a Windows upgrade.

Any thoughts would be appreciated?

I've updated to Windows Live Mail but still can't open attachments. I've
reinstalled AVG as you suggested ...but isn't it insecure without mail
scanning on?

Any other ideas...should I reinstall Windows Vista...it did work with
attachments for a while?

Go ahead and reinstall AVG with the custom install option where
you can deselect the mail scanning module.

I don't have any other fixes for you to try with Windows Mail, but you
might consider upgrading to Windows Live Mail:

I've uninstalled AVG but the hasn't solved the problem. Presumably I
should reinstall else I'm vulnerable to viruses?

I get nothing when I try to open a Mail attachment but "the command
failed to execute" when I try to save the attachment.

Attachments are enabled under Tools , options, security.

For some months, attachments worked normally. They stopped working a
month or so ago.

Any further ideas?

In order for AVG to be compatible with Windows Mail it should
have been installed with the custom install option where one can
deselect the mail scanning module.

Is there an error message when you try to open or save attachments?
Make sure you have enabled attachments: Tools, Options, Security,
uncheck "Do not allow attachments..."

I have the same problem I run AVG 7.5 as anti-virus. I've also tried
restarting in diagnostic mode (which I think stops all non-Microsoft
software from starting) but still I cannot open or save attachments. I
also cannot open the attachments if I use web-mail using internet
explorer on this computer.

What kind of attachments are they? .JPG, .DOCX, .PPS, etc.

I'm a little bit worried about that fix.
I read that it can cause more harm than good, is this correct ?

Like you, I am leery of registry cleaners. It is always safer to use
Windows' own tools, such as the one under All Programs, Accessories,
System Tools, Disk Cleanup.
