Cannot map to "new" XP machine

I have a desktop machine that ran Win2K for years. I just replaced
the C: drive with a new drive and installed XP Pro SP2.

I also have an XP laptop which used to be able to map to the desktop
under Win2K with no problem. Now that the desktop is running XP, the
laptop can no longer map to it.

I can ping it, but not map to it. I've tried it with Windows Firewall
turned off (on the desktop), and turned on with the default settings.
The results are the same.

Both machines are connected to a router, but since no machine names,
MAC addresses, or IP addresses have changed, I wouldn't think any
router adjustments would be needed.

I have sharing turned on for the drive I'm trying to map to (I also
have a printer attached to it with sharing turned on, that I cannot
access from the laptop). The default configuration of Firewall
appears to include port openings for file & print sharing, so I
wouldn't think it's a port problem.

If I open a command window and run: net use \\desktopname\sharename or
\\desktopIP\sharename, I get "System error 5 has occurred."

The user name on the desktop is different from the one I use on the
laptop, but it was different when the desktop was running Win2K also.
When I try to map, I do specify "logon as different user name" and
specify the correct user account name on the desktop (and that user is
an administrator).

The laptop is part of an AD domain on a corporate network also, but
this hasn't changed since the desktop was moved from Win2K to XP.
Just trying to provide as much info as possible.

I meant to include, the Net logon service on the desktop was set to
disabled by default. I changed it to Automatic and rebooted, with the
same results. When I try to start Net logon manually, I get "the
service started and then stopped."

The Workstation service is set to Automatic and is running.

Update... I can now map the drive, but now it seems to be the other
extreme - it doesn't require a user ID/password to map to it. I don't
see where to restrict access to a shared drive to specific users?
