Cannot log in/Needs activation but already activated

Hi,

Someone I know has XP and worked with it for some time now.
Since today she cannot log in.
At the login screen she clicks on her user id, types in the password and
hits return.
She then gets a message 'XP Needs to be activated' and 'Activate now?'.
When she clicks on 'Yes' to activate, it says 'XP is already activated' and
gets thrown back to the login screen.
If she clicks on 'No' she also gets thrown back to the login screen.

In brief: She can't work.
This is a new machine that came with XP preinstalled.

Anyone knows how to solve this?
