Cannot load OS

We had Diskkeeper's trial copy on our PC and it has expired on Wednesday, so
I uninstalled it and turned off the computer. When my husband came home the
same day, he turned on the PC and as far as he remembers he saw something
like McAfee quarantined something and then the screen displayed only "Windows
XP" instead of showing user names. One thing that happened after installing
Diskkeeper was seeing "stera not found - Skipping AUTOCHECK" before the
Usernames appeared. Now, even when we try to start the PC in the Safe Mode,
we cannot. It says Safe Mode and after seeing the hour-glass, we end up on
the page where it just says Windows XP and it just sits there.

I also tried the Recovery option and ran CHKDSK. Supposedly there were some
problems and they were fixed. I almost ran FIXMBR but didn't do it, as there
are some pictures that I haven't burned yet as well as our last tax return!

One thing that is always there is: stera not found. I wonder if this
corrupted something.

Any ideas?

CHKDSK really has no validity in recovery console, the text must be:
CHKDSK C: /R or CHKDSK C: /p /p is correct in recovery..Try re entering
recovery,type:Fixboot Type:CHKDSK C: /R After,type:Listsvc Scroll thru
the services,write down 3rd party unwanted,exit,then you can/could stop
the problem service(s) by typing:Disable The wizard somewhat guides you
thru, type:HELP For all cmds Also,if mcafee was part of diskkeep, once back
in xp,or in Disable in recovery, you have alot of work ahead deleting the
files
off youre pc,they are everywhere......
