Cannot launch Windows Mail unless I restart computer

When I click on my windows mail icon, it won't launch unless I restart my
computer. Then it will launch and works fine but if I close the program, it
won't launch again. I also get an error message that says the following:
Outlook Express at 0x0359399d referenced memory at 0x0000006c. The memory
could not be written. Click ok to terminate the program.
At the top of the window this message appears in it says the following:
Outlook Express Foldersync Window Class: WinMail. exe-application error
Any suggestions? Thank you.

Outlook Express won't run under Vista. Its replacement is named Windows
Mail.

Which are you trying to run?

WinMail is descended from Outlook Express and apparently some error messages
were so rare that they didn't get updated. It reads like some other program
is interfering with WinMail.

Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no
protection not provided by the regular resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and
Outlook Express and should be uninstalled. The latest version of Trend's
anti-virus seems to be causing problems too.

If that doesn't fix it, do a thorough check for malware, following all of
the steps at one of these Web pages.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince
you that you owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

I will try this - thank you.

I'm not sure how to turn off email scanning and exclude EML files from the
virus scan. When I click on the tab in my virus program that says "internet
and email controls," the only thing I can see that you might be talking about
is "Protection Against Web Threats' - under that it says "When activated,
this feature guards against phishing pharming and other web threats that
could steal personal information." Should I turn this off? I also can turn
off "Spam Email Filter". thanks

I just found under settings where I can "uncheck" threats to incoming and
outgoing mail". If I uncheck these - will it eliminate the my email being
scanned? Also I found under "advanced settings" something that says "ignore
specific files and folders" and i can click on "select" - but it opens a
window that says "add file or folder". Which one do I want and will it give
me a list where I can choose "EML"? Thanks

Since I don't know what anti-virus you're working with I can't say much
about its settings. Here's what I can say:

Yes, turn off "Spam Email Filter".
Yes, uncheck threats to incoming and outgoing mail. This will NOT leave you
at any increased risk.

It's Micro Trend 2008 - not Pro - just regular. I will try what you said -
thank you.

You may have an antivirus program in which email scanning cannot be
turned off. Which antivirus program do you have?

I've got Trend Micro 2008 too. It's the spam filter that's keeping winmail
open. I'm in regular contact with Trend about it. Turn the spam filter off
and these messages stop. The junk mail options in Windows Mail - Tools, junk
mail options - do the job just as well. The spam filter also messes up the
database compacting too. The new so called Vista SP1 compatible versions
clearly weren't fully checked.

The only solutions that have been identified are

a) disable any interaction between security programs and WM;
b) if that's not sufficient, uninstall the troublemaker programs;
c) or else upgrade to Windows Live Mail.
