Cannot launch Windows Live Mail

M

Michael Garczynski

I cannot launch Windows Live Mail. When I do I get an error stating
Sorry, something unexpected happened and Windows Live Mail must close. Your
most recent changes may not be saved.

The mail on this workstation was saved from an account that is no longer
working. All of the inbox mail was empty and moved to folders. I can see
the folder structures when I open the application, but this error closes down
the program. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the Windows Live Mail
without results.

Any ideas?

I may have found part of the problem. The computer no longer has a contacts
folder. I see it on the other computer with a special folder icon, however,

Windows Mail or Windows Live Mail?
The C:\Users\username\Contacts folder is not used in Windows Live Mail.

If you really did mean Windows Live Mail, the newsgroup to which you posted
is dedicated to supporting the Windows Mail program.
You will get more help by posting that problem in the WLM newsgroup:

or via your news reader: news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop

I didn't know there was a difference. I assumed Windows Mail was replaced by
Windows Live Mail

Well, you can replace it, or you can stay with Windows Mail a while longer.
Your choice.

Hi, Michael.
I didn't know there was a difference. I assumed Windows Mail was replaced
by
Windows Live Mail

Depends on what the meaning of "replaced" is.

Windows Mail (WM) is an integral part of Vista; it comes bundled in every
copy of Vista, including all those millions of disks still sitting on
retailers' shelves. You can use it or ignore it, but you can't delete it.
And it won't run on WinXP or (officially) on the new Windows 7. Microsoft
has announced that development on WM stopped in 2006, so there will be no
updates for it except for security fixes.

Windows Live Mail (WLM) is an application that can be downloaded and
installed like other apps. It is a part of Windows Live Essentials, which
you can get here: http://download.iive.com Like WM, it is a mail and news
program. It will run in WinXP, Vista - and the new Win7. It will run
side-by-side with WM, since each maintains its own Message Store and, except
for the initial Import on installation, they don't share anything with each
other (except enough of the name to create confusion). Many of us run both
WM and WLM for a few weeks while deciding which one to keep.

Win7 will have NO email or newsgroup application bundled with it. We will
have to furnish and install one of our choice. WM is not officially
supported on Win7, although some users have reported that it can be made to
run. So we can use WLM or a third-party product.

THIS (vista.mail) newsgroup is for WM. The peer-to-peer NG for WLM is
microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop. (The word "desktop" is a relic
from the beta two years ago; it is no longer a part of the name of the app.)

And, of course, neither WM nor WLM is the same as Outlook or Outlook
Express. :^]
