Launching windows mail

G

Guest

Hello, I have just upgraded from xp to vista and there appears to be no way
for me to launch windows mail, other than via the 'windows help and support'
search function, where I can find a link to "click to open windows mail".
This launches windows mail so it IS installed and runs fine.

There is an icon in the start menu (although not in classic mode), but when
I click on it I get a message saying "The item you selected is unavailable.
It might have been moved, renamed or removed. Do you want to remove it from
the list."
There is no item in the program menu.

Please tell me how I can add windows mail to the program menu, as a desktop
shortcut and in my startup folder.

Thank you

Navigate to C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\, then right-click on
WinMail.exe, select Create Shortcut.

Thanks Gary. There is no WinMail.exe. There is a WinMail.exe.mui in a file
named en-US. When I click on a desktop shortcut for this it opens the
"windows cannot open this file" box. Renaming it WinMail.exe doesn't help.
Any suggestions?

The link in Help is to
"%ProgramFiles%\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe"

You can open a cmd window (Winkey-R and type cmd)
and type the word "set" (without the quotes)

look at where the ProgramFiles variable points to...

Thanks Dave. I did that and got a page full of text but this is a step or two

I wanted to see if the Help & Support link was to C:\Program Files\ ... and
it is.

You should be able to go to C:\Program Files\Windows Mail and see
WinMail.exe

or Click on Start - All Programs and see a link to Windows Mail

I don't know why you can't.

If you right-click on the Windows Mail entry on the Start Menu, and select
Properties... what does it say for the Target? It should be
"%ProgramFiles%\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe"

Interesting, when I right click on it the only options I get are 'Internet
Properties' (which brings up the old internet options box) and 'Remove from
this list'

I have no idea why you can't see WinMail.exe in the \Program Files\Windows Mail\
directory.

Right click on the Windows Mail icon on the top of the All Programs list,
not the E-Mail icon in the pinned items area of the Start menu.

No I hadn't tried that. It brings up wnmail.exe as a program. Properties
tells me it is in
C:\Program Files\Windows Mail

It is also shown as hidden but the tick box is grey and I can't untick it.
Very strange. (Folder Options View has Show Hidden Files is selected)

However.... right clicking it gives me the option to 'pin it to start menu'
so I now have a way to launch it and can also drag it onto the desktop as a
shortcut.....

Cheers Cal Bear! .... :)

I would still need to find it in windows explorer to drag it into my startup
folder tho......

If you go to the Securities tab of Properties and take ownership you
could probably remove the hidden property.

If you right click on the start orb and select Open all Users you can
copy the shortcut to the Startup folder. (After right clicking and selecting
Copy on the desktop icon, of course.)

May I ask why you want Windows Mail to automatically start at startup?

You should probably also go to Control Panel>Default Programs>Set default programs
Click Windows Mail and click Set this program as default. Then the E-mail entry in the
pinned area of the Start menu should open Windows Mail.

Good to hear that you got it worked out
Very strange that the file is marked hidden...
If you would like to change the properties it is not that hard to do...

However.... right clicking it gives me the option to 'pin it to start menu' Default
so I now have a way to launch it and can also drag it onto the desktop as a
shortcut.....

Cheers Cal Bear! .... :)

I would still need to find it in windows explorer to drag it into my startup
folder tho......

:

When you type winmail.exe in the search box on the start menu what
happens?
(sorry if you have already tried this)

Hello Cal Bear... there is only one Mail icon it is under the blue ie
icon on
the top of the start menu. there is no icon in the All Programs list.

:

Right click on the Windows Mail icon on the top of the All Programs
list,
not the E-Mail icon in the pinned items area of the Start menu.

Interesting, when I right click on it the only options I get are
'Internet
Properties' (which brings up the old internet options box) and
'Remove
from
this list'

:

I wanted to see if the Help & Support link was to C:\Program Files\
...
and
it is.

You should be able to go to C:\Program Files\Windows Mail and see
WinMail.exe

or Click on Start - All Programs and see a link to Windows Mail

I don't know why you can't.

If you right-click on the Windows Mail entry on the Start Menu, and
select
Properties... what does it say for the Target? It should be
"%ProgramFiles%\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe"

Thanks Dave. I did that and got a page full of text but this is a
step or
two
outside my pc expertise ;-)

What exactly am I looking for?

Did you try setting WinMail default via Control Panel | Default Programs?

Can't find how to change the hidden property but I now have a shortcut on
my
desktop and have pasted windows mail into my startup folder (it's just
sheer
laziness really, I come home, turn on my laptop and by the time I get
changed
my pc has fired up, my inbox is open and new mail has been received!)

Thanks for your help Cal Bear.. :)

If you go to the Securities tab of Properties and take ownership you
could probably remove the hidden property.

If you right click on the start orb and select Open all Users you can
copy the shortcut to the Startup folder. (After right clicking and
selecting
Copy on the desktop icon, of course.)

May I ask why you want Windows Mail to automatically start at startup?

You should probably also go to Control Panel>Default Programs>Set default
programs
Click Windows Mail and click Set this program as default. Then the E-mail
entry in the
pinned area of the Start menu should open Windows Mail.
