Cannot install printers

Christopher Sparks

My printers have suddenly disappeared and neither (LPT
and USB) are auto-detected by XP. I receive the error
message 'Operation could not be completed' when I click
the Add Printer option in the Printers&Faxes part of
Control Panel. The Add Hardware wizard also fails to
detect the connected printers. When I run the setup from
the driver archive it gets partway thru and then says the
printer did not install.

It's all very strange, especially since both were
printing quite happily a week ago. Any help would be
much appreciated.

First ensure the print spooler is started... from the command prompt, type

net start spooler

(and hit enter). They should return. If not, at the command prompt, type

sfc /scannow
(note the space between c and /) and hit enter.

Wow. Talk about a quick response :) Everything now
works fine. It seems I had the Print Spooler service on
Manual instead of Automatic. That'll teach me to fiddle
late at night.

Many thanks.
